As the Killer Mile race gears up for 2025, we’re excited to announce that the event will benefit three remarkable charities dedicated to making a positive impact in the Mow Cop community and beyond. Each of these organisations is committed to serving those in need and creating a stronger, more connected community. Here’s a closer look at the charities we’ll be supporting through this year’s race.
St Luke’s Community Group

Founded by Alison Howard, the St Luke’s Community Group came to life as a response to the potential closure of St Luke’s Church, located next to Woodcock Wells. The group aims to foster a sense of community and improve local life, focusing especially on aiding those in need.
With a variety of programs, including a toddler group, forest school, dementia-friendly lunches, community meals, and a choir that performs at nursing homes and churches, they truly bring people together. They even host bus trips and festive events, like the Pensioner’s Christmas Party, ensuring all community members feel included.
While some events have a minimal charge to cover costs, Alison and her dedicated team of volunteers work tirelessly to ensure the community spirit thrives. The group has outgrown its original venue, now operating from Mount Pleasant Village Hall, which underscores the need for continued support. Alison’s background with the YMCA in Hanley equips her to help volunteers develop essential skills, ultimately enhancing their employability and self-confidence.

Greyhound Gap

For over 22 years, Greyhound Gap has been a champion for greyhounds in need. Founded by Lisa Cartwright, who has a personal connection to the greyhound racing industry, this charity works tirelessly to rescue dogs facing euthanasia and find them loving homes.
With a dedicated team of seven staff members backed by a network of volunteers, Greyhound Gap operates 54 kennels and incurs monthly costs of around £40,000, primarily due to food and veterinary expenses. The organisation rescues and rehomes approximately 100–110 dogs each year, all while advocating for greyhound welfare.
Beyond local efforts, Greyhound Gap is engaged on an international scale, participating in initiatives that extend even to China and Eastern Europe. Their fun presence at the Killer Mile—often seen in costumes like dinosaurs or greyhounds—reflects their whimsical spirit as they pursue serious work.
Community support from events like the Killer Mile is vital to sustain its mission and ensure that no greyhound is left behind.

The church offers various programs and initiatives, strengthening community ties and providing guidance and support to all who seek it. This includes youth programs, weekly services, and events that encourage community participation and engagement.
Pastor Matt and the church congregation are dedicated to uplifting the community and meeting the needs of those who may feel isolated. As a relaxed and welcoming environment, the Mow Cop Community Church is a vital resource for fostering hope, connection, and belonging within the neighbourhood.
