Timeline of the Killer Mile

  • 1982

    Inaugural Race

    On 14th April, the first Mow Cop Killer Mile is held, attracting 95 local runners. Martin Bishop wins the race with a time of 6:50, establishing a tradition for challenging one-mile road races.

  • 1987

    Emerging Elite Records

    Roger Hackney achieves a time of 6:17, marking the transition of the race into a realm of world-class competition. Hackney’s performance highlights the Killer Mile as a venue for elite athletes.

  • 1988-1990

    Peak Popularity

    The event experiences explosive growth, peaking with over 1,100 entries in some years. The race format expands to support 10 races to accommodate the increasing number of participants. Adjustments are made to the race date to allow for better daylight conditions.

  • 1990

    Record-Breaking Times

    Andy Wilton lowers the men’s record to 6:14, showcasing the event’s continued evolution and the high-calibre competition it attracts.

  • 1991

    Current Men's Record Set

    Bashir Hussain sets the longstanding course record of 6:12, solidifying his place in the race’s history. This remarkable record remains unbeaten to this day.

  • 1992

    Women’s Record Achievement

    Shireen Barbour impressively records the fastest women’s time of 7:54, demonstrating the remarkable growth of female participation and competition in the event.

  • 2000s

    Increased Community Engagement

    The race continues to evolve with an emphasis on community involvement, including fun runs and family-oriented activities, drawing runners of all ages and skill levels.

  • 2022

    A Return Post-Pandemic

    After a challenging period due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mow Cop Killer Mile successfully returns, revitalising the local running community and sparking renewed interest in participation.

  • 2023

    Continued Success

    The event remains a beloved staple of the regional running calendar, drawing over 600-800 enthusiastic participants each year. Organised by Mow Cop Runners, it promotes health and fitness while fostering community spirit.

  • 2025

    Looking Forward

    As we prepare for the race on 8th May, the Mow Cop Killer Mile welcomes runners of all levels. With new sponsor Chaffinch, we aim to make this year’s event bigger and better, challenging participants to tackle one of the UK’s toughest mile races.
